Horsch enjoyed a measure of success with its TerraTrac from the mid1980s to mid1990s. To find out why it was developed and what became of it we travelled to company headquarters at Sitzenhof in Germany for a chat with two men that know pretty much all there is to know about it
The first is Michael Horsch who confirms that it all started autumn 1984. Having developed a 4.0m direct drill prototype (wide at the time), his search began for a 200hp tractor to pull it on the family farm. Ideally, it needed large flotation tyres to reduce ground pressure, an even weight distribution on all wheels, and be able to turn on the spot without scuffing at the headland.
