Welger 730 and 830 balers: Welger AP 730 and AP 830 conventional balers have been in production since the late 1980s with a design that has much in common with their AP 73 and AP 83 predecessors. Little change has been made to these dependable machines over the years. And, as such, used examples should be judged on their condition and, equally important, how much work they will be expected to do. James de Havilland reports

If the farm needs a conventional baler, then Welger’s name is almost certain to appear near the top of the alternatives list. The firm’s 1.80m pick-up AP 730 and wider 2.05m AP 830 models have been around for years, are well proven and both will happily produce a haylage bale. The ‘lighter’ duty AP 630, which is not covered in this article, looks similar to the AP 730 but is not designed to offer as high a throughput, so bear this in mind before deciding on a particular machine.

With regard to history, Welger introduced the AP 730 and AP 830 in 1986. Initially imported by WestMac, Lely UK took over in the 1990s. from that date, apart from detailed changes to the logos and decals, the balers were not really altered in any hugely significant way until 2004, when the tricky-to-grease knotter and feed drive
