LOOKING BACK REPORT: Can you buy a 120hp tractor for 60,000 Deutschmarks? Yes, you can. From Ursus. The company is indeed selling one horsepower for just about 500 Deutschmarks.
We drove the Ursus 1234 (87.7kW/119hp) to get an impression of what this money buys.
If you are offered an 88kW/120hp tractor for 60,000 Deutschmarks, you know for sure this must be a tractor that is at least five years old and has clocked 2,000 hours, so the first few costly repairs are due. This is not true for Ursus. These tractors from Poland are brand new and yet not more expensive. We wanted to find out about this intriguing offer so took a closer look at the Ursus 1234 with 87.5kW/119hp.
The Ursus 1234 is a model from the firm’s top range. In Germany, Ursus tractors are marketed in two model ranges: the small models from 2812 (28kW/38hp) to 4514 (59kW/80hp) under the MF design licenced by Ursus; and the high-horsepower range from the 0932 (59kW/80hp) model all the way up to the 1634 (114kW/155hp) as Ursus tractors.
First impressions of the new 1234 are mixed.
Of course, the design is not the most modern, but the tractor doesn’t look out of date either. A few months ago, the 1234 received a new cab, and this is far more in line with western standards than the previous version: the cab access door was updated (although an additional handle would be helpful), and the awkward passenger seat that was transversely arranged behind the
driver’s seat has disappeared. The plastic cladding, tilt steering wheel, western style seat (optional), work lights and mirrors are all fine.
