Tractor test: Capable of thumping out a claimed 306kW/416hp/411PS (97/68 EC), the Axion 950 is currently the world’s most powerful conventional tractor on offer from a mainstream maker — or it was when we tested it earlier this year. Yet this mighty workhorse is not exclusively all about engine ratings; in our test it also delivered the highest ever drawbar power figure from a wheeled tractor

Ever since Claas unveiled the Axion 950 at Agritechnica in 2011 we have been itching to get our hands on the tractor — to put it through the profi tractor test. Up against some established players, Claas has had to come up with something special. And it’s certainly done that.

So, straight into test stats. The mighty Claas quite literally sent the DLG dyno into a spin, pumping out 270kW/367hp/363PS at rated speed and nudging a staggering 277kW/376hp/371PS at maximum output. To date, these are the best statistics the DLG has  recorded from a conventional wheeled tractor. And all of this performance comes from a Stage IIIB/Tier 4i compliant FPT six-pot, 8.7-litre motor with a maximum torque of 1,568Nm (from 1,400-1,200rpm). Only flies in the ointment are the 31% increase in torque and a 21% constant power range — not bad results but also not quite at the same record-breaking level as those other awesome figures.

With such a powerful performance, surely the Axion must knock back the diesel. Not at all. The DLG measured 236g/kWh at rated speed and even down to 222g/kWh at maximum output.
