Last year Massey Ferguson subjected its 5400 tractor range to something of a shake-up, and one of the resulting newcomers was the 74kW/100hp 5440. We briefly drove this tractor in our July 2011 issue, but, as it’s one of MF’s key models for the UK and Irish markets, we reckoned it would be worth bringing it back for a full tractor test. Here are our findings.

A livestock farmer’s ideal tractor has to tick a tall stack of boxes — relatively compact and agile for scooting in and around farm buildings with a loader, but still be tough enough for carrying out jobs in the field. And then, of course, there’s the thorny issue of the price tag. Massey Ferguson did a decent job of meeting this jack-of-all-trades buyer demand when it launched its 5400 series, so it’ll come as no surprise to learn that last year’s 5400 revamp was awaited with a fair degree of anticipation. As part of that update, one of the new additions was the 74kW/100hp 5440 Dyna-4 unit featured here.
