LIVESTOCK: With the Future electric control system from Kristen Stable Equipment, feed fences can be opened and closed remotely. Here, profi has looked at the technology and how the system could possibly benefit you.
You’ve just settled down in the kitchen with a brew and a biscuit when you suddenly remember: “Crap, the cows are still locked in the feed barrier!” If you are chuckling in agreement, then we have good news for you. German livestock barn equipment outfitter Kristen is now offering a technology that makes life easier for dairy farmers — the Future electric lever. The system is basically an internet-controlled electric motor that opens and closes the gate for stock, even if you are several miles away from the barn, which, on thinking about it, could be extremely handy.
Using feed barriers instead of neck bars for restraint
The installation of a feed barrier in a dairy or cattle barn is a hotly debated topic. Opponents argue that these are too expensive and don’t offer enough freedom when eating. Advocates, on the other hand, like the idea of having the capability to restrain their animals for insemination or examination without any fuss. In any case, according to the German agricultural insurance company SVLFG, the restraining of animals undergoing treatment has been mandatory on dairy farms from April 1, 2024.
