As well as continuing to carry the torch for superb user comfort, the 4220 retains other familiar Fastrac traits such as four-wheel steer and a rear load platform. So how does this current incarnation perform in our rigorous Powermix test. Read on to find out
Everyone knows the Fastrac’s trump card is comfort. Yet that is far from being the whole story. The 4220 also provides you with a great view while zipping along at 60km/hr. And supplying the grunt to get you there is AGCO Power’s AWF66, six-cylinder motor, which nestles under that most conspicuous of yellow bonnets.
First pit stop for this agricultural racer was the DLG dyno. With the engine purring at its rated speed, the needle settled at exactly 134.1kW/179.8hp, which in our experience is not exactly overwhelming. But then the motor really digs in and produces a whopping 155.5kW/208.5hp down at 1,800rpm. That’s a 21.4kW/28.7hp rise … and rather more than the 13.0kW/17.4hp promised. Excellent. We didn’t have any problem, either, with the power curve, which reflects a torque rise of more than 48% (at 33% engine speed drop) and a 113% start-off torque.
On to test fuel consumption, and the Fastrac supped 266g/kWh at rated speed and 245g/kWh at maximum output. Both results mean the 4220 is not the most fuel-efficient tractor in this power band — obviously down to the 4220’s longer drivelines as revealed by the test’s drawbar power measurements: 110.0kW/147.5hp up at the rated speed and 129.0kW/173.0hp at its maximum output at 1,800rpm. Again, nothing too staggering to write home about.
