PRACTICAL TEST: With the 435, Japa offers an automatic firewood processor with a splitting facility for logs up to 43cm in diameter. We tested the Finnish machine on spruce and beech.
Finland-based company Terra Patris Group actually owns three firewood processor manufacturers: Hakki Pilke, Palax and Japa. Our focus here is on Japa, which is imported into the UK by Warwickshire-based Fuelwood with PJ Callan looking after the Irish market. Founded back in 1977, today Japa produces a range of firewood processors, feed tables and firewood cleaning systems

For our practical test we got our hands on a 435 processor along with the feed table. Setting up this 435 model isn’t a problem thanks to the three-point headstock, as well a couple of forklift pockets to help move the outfit into position. However, because the 435 measures almost 3.50m wide, the more or less 2,100kg machine is too wide to travel on public roads on the back of a tractor. For travelling between locations, it’s best to sit it lengthways on a trailer where it is then just 2.49m wide.
