DRIVING IMPRESSION: The Magnum story continues with Case IH introducing a new version of its high horsepower tractor. There is no change to the engine, gearbox and hydraulics in the new Magnum AFS; it’s in the cab where the magic happens

Many expected the new Magnum to pack a 500hp punch, but that extra muscle is still a little way off. Indeed most of the big metal components remain unchanged from the outgoing Magnum models, and the performance stats are pretty much the same as those on the 380 flagship in our full 12/2016 test.

The Magnum AFS definitely takes some of its styling cues from the Optum, with the new bonnet and LED lights giving it a ‘don’t mess with me’ look. But appearances won’t get the jobs done. To boost work rates, the research and development spend has mainly focused on the AFS Connect in-cab tech including the controls and operating concept.
