A key performance bottleneck for the most powerful foragers in high-yielding grass swaths is the pick-up. This is something the latest Kemper 30R is designed to overcome, with a claimed swath gathering appetite to match the hungriest of foragers.
For most forage harvesters, under typically heavy first cut conditions, the existing Kemper 639 Premium pick-up should be up to the job; this same unit, finished in red and badged the C3003 is available to fit Claas forage harvesters (see profi 01/21) and, as the N3003 Maximum, New Holland models. So, why the need for the new Kemper 30R? Simple. The increased use of 900hp plus forage harvesters in grass. Match a powerful forager to a high-yielding crop in huge productivity boosting swaths and the slip clutch on the pick-up can often work overtime.
The Kemper 30R seeks to overcome this by featuring:
● With a significantly larger auger
● A bigger pick-up
● Chain-free driveline
We matched the new 30R to a 970hp John Deere 9900i to see how it fared.
Higher-capacity auger
The feed auger of the Kemper 30R is a standout feature, its 800mm outer diameter contrasting with the 560mm of an existing Kemper 639. Fitted with 200mm tall flights to accommodate high volumes of crop, the auger has a greatly increased intake capacity. The auger flights not just larger, they are arranged at a shallow angle and elongated to ensure a more consistent feed.
The detachable auger paddles are also angled, with the claim this can boost crop flow in uneven swaths. To increase durability, the wearing edges of the auger and crop touching metal are Dura Line coated with Hardox steel used in high wear areas.
No chains
The auger is driven by a large, oil immersed gearbox with direct drive from the main central pick-up gearbox.
