New Holland has developed the 1270 Plus Density, to bring some of the higher density features from the larger machines to those producing a 70cm bale. We tested the firm’s new Big Baler model in straw last season.
Externally, the new Big Baler can be recognised by the stickers, the large blue flash replaced by more elegant black and silver badging. Equally as prominent are chassis and pick-up, which now don the same New Holland yellow in place of the common CNHI dark grey. But before we get lost in superficial detail, we’d better progress to the important stuff.
Let’s start at the pick-up. Nylon rings have been added, which are said to improve the durability of the seals on the roller bearings. And in the case of the balers with the rotor chopping system, the pick-up drive shaft will benefit from beefier bearings. These balers will also feature additional guide blocks to better hold the knife drawer in its position, helping to prevent the knives and rotor from coming into contact with each other.
More stability was also the main aim behind redesigning the packer shaft on the balers that don’t have the chopping system. Like the HD baler models, these are now made of stronger material.
Knotters without tails
New Holland introduced the ‘LoopMaster’ knotter just over three years ago (see profi 6/2020).
Now the reliability of the ‘tail-free’ knotter has been improved, with a cleaning plate to keep the twin disc clean. This plate prevents crop from accumulating in the twine disc. And the disc itself is now a high-strength cast piece — and this includes the mechanism that opens the twine retainer. This means the polyurethane component is no longer needed.
Almost 10% higher density
To produce higher density bales, most ‘Plus Density’ changes are found on the plunger and the bale chamber. New Holland claims the plunger and reinforced connecting rod provide 27% more baling pressure (400kN instead of 315kN).
