Borders-based grain handling equipment specialist Thorburns looks set to branch out down an altogether different path – fertiliser spreaders.
For the last three years the company has been importing a range of 10t-55t mobile batch driers from Italian manufacturer Agrex but is now evaluating whether there is room in the UK market for another colour twin-disc spreader.
Currently there are five key players in the game but could a sixth manage to grab a slice of the action? Agrex certainly believe so and say they would enter the market at some 10-15% below the prices of the competition.
The firm’s line-up includes mounted machines from 800-litres to 3,200-litres and trailed units of up to 7,000-litre capacity. Spread widths of up to 36m are said to be possible and, as you’d imagine, specifications vary widely including variable rate control, GPS-activated auto section control (achieved by altering the product drop point onto the disc), border spreading, hydraulic or pto drive and ISObus-compatible controls.
Thorburns was using Cereals as a platform to gauge potential customer reaction and says it would not start bringing spreaders in until 2025 once a proper dealer network had been established.
