The five-model range features a new AGCO Power six-cylinder, 7.5 litre engine instead of the Deutz unit used on the existing Vario 700, giving power outputs from 203-283hp (ECE R120). The range-topping Fendt Vario 728 gets a power boost from ‘Dynamic Performance’ (DP) to offer up to 303hp – the name indicating that the system functions purely dynamically, rather than being related to driving speed and is intended for pto applications.
Also revised is the drive train, with the new Fendt VarioDrive distributing power dynamically between the axles as needed, eliminating the need for manual switching in and out of all-wheel drive when going between field and road. These models also gain the Fendt iD design from the higher horsepower ranges where engine, transmission, hydraulics and cooling system are designed for high torque at low engine speed – rated engine speed is 1,700rpm and the top two models reach a top speed of 60kph at 1,450rpm. Maximum torque of 1,450Nm in the Fendt Vario 728 is achieved ay 1,300rpm.
Another of the technologies borrowed from the larger tractors is the Concentric Air System (CAS) cooling package firs seen on the 1000 Vario, which is driven by its own hydraulic motor and features a fan which pushes cooler air into the cooling pack, rather than pulling it. This allows the fan speed to be cut and thus, power requirement. The compact design enhances the tractor’s manoeuvrability, with a 56cm diameter fan allowing a slim bonnet which permits a steering angle of 52deg.
Pitched to offer more flexibility than its 800 Vario big brothers, which currently occupy a similar 226-287hp bracket, the Fendt 728 Vario has a power to weight ratio of 30.5kg/hp, but has a GVW of up to 15 tonnes when ballasted front and rear for heavy towing.
The new 700 Vario series gets VarioGrip tyre pressure control for the first time, allowing optimum tyre pressure to be set from the cab, increasing the tyre’s contact area with the ground and boosting tractive power by up to 8%.
An enhanced version of FendtOne gives the option of using a multifunction joystick or the 3L configurable joystick, and has the digital dashboard and separate 12in armrest terminal, plus the further option of the headliner terminal.
Other cab enhancements include six different seat configurations including one with ‘intuitive’ operation via the terminal; while stage 4 air filtration, equivalent to a self-propelled sprayer, can be specified along with front and rear cameras for easier manoeuvring and implement control.
Fendt says that the new models will run alongside the 700 Vario Gen 6 range as the AGCO Power engine takes them into a different horsepower segment, and it still sees a demand for the sub-200hp six-cylinder tractors; there are no imminent plans to update the 800 Vario.
The Vario 700 Gen 7 models are expected to reach the dealerships in Q3 2023.
