First seen in four- and six-cylinder X7 models (150-225hp) as a six powershift/five range ZF version, the new P6-Drive (six powershifts/four ranges) transmission in the X6.4 P6-Drive was developed in-house by parent company Argo Tractors. The box in the new Stage V models provides 24f+24r speeds with a 40fx40r creeper option and a top speed of 50km/hr.

Already on the assembly line at the Italian plant at Fabbrico, the new tractors, which replace the Stage IV X6.4 Xtrashift models, are described as ideal for general arable and grassland field work. They are also flagged up as a good match for an M40 front loader, which is controlled using the same multifunction joystick used to operate the P6-Drive gearbox and spool valves.

Power to the three P6-Drive models; X6.413 (125hp), X6.414 (135hp) and X6.415 (144), comes from a 4.5-litre FPT NEF engine. The block provides a 10hp power boost for transport and pto operations to 135hp, 146hp and 155hp, respectively.

Lift capacity of the front linkage is 2.5t (7.2t at the rear). The maximum rear tyre size is 650/60R38 and maximum permissible weight is 9.5t. The powertrain layout allows for a wheelbase of 2.56m, the 123l/min closed-centre hydraulics can handle up to seven spool valves and all models have a four-speed pto.

Standard UK/Ireland spec includes mechanical cab suspension and multifunction joystick, whilst 50km/hr models come with suspended front axle and the 12” touchscreen (DSM). The new bonnet opens 90 degrees and the layout of the radiators is said to allow for quick and easy service. Up to 14 LED lights are available, eight of which are incorporated in the cab roof.

The new models are available in standard McCormick red or with the optional red power configuration with metallic paintwork and black rims. “The red power option is popular,” comments Argo Tractors marketing director Antonio Salvaterra, “generally accounting for around 25% of all McCormick tractors leaving the plant. However, with certain product ranges, such as the X7.6 VT-Drive, this increases to 75%-80%.”

The European launch of the new models is at this week’s Italian Fieragricola show and the first public outing in the UK will be at rescheduled LAMMA event in May. “I am hoping that we will have a preview machine for dealers and possibly some customers to see in March,” comments business development manager Ben Agar of Argo Tractor UK and Ireland.

“We have already secured retail sales and a good firm order book from UK and Irish dealers and are confident the new models will help us with our growth plans.”
