French manufacturer Thierart is well-known in its homeland as a manufacturer of bolt-on chaff collection systems for fitting to the rear of a combine harvester. Emptied at the headland and baled for use as poultry litter or to make biogas; the company has now gone a step further and developed a non-stop technique to bale chaff directly while combining. Successfully tested on a Claas Tucano 480, chaff is augured into a hopper towed behind the combine. The engine fitted to this same machine not only powers the chain-driven floor mechanism to feed chaff to the round baler, but also the baler itself – a John Deere 960.  With a 2cu.m. capacity, the hopper also acts as a sort of pre-chamber while the baler door is open, allowing the combine to continue cutting when a bale is ejected.
