There were rumours of Chinese interest and some of the big tractor brands are also believed to have had a look, but all attempts to find a new owner for Rabe have been unsuccessful and we understand that the German plough and cultivator maker is to close.

Purchased by the French Grégoire-Besson Group in 2011 after a succession of brief ownerships but continued to make tillage machinery and in the German market also sold rebranded Sulky fertiliser spreaders.

The GB Group filed for bankruptcy of Rabe last July. We understand that the facility at Bad Essen will continue to process all remaining orders until May, when the company will shut up shop. The fate of the 200 staff is not yet known.

Founded in 1889, Rabe has been in business for over 125 years.
