The Claas combi Rollant 455 RC Uniwrap is transforming into the 630 with a number of subtle changes to speed up the wrapping process in fact enough tweaks to warrant the name change.

Starting at the front, this is the first Claas pickup to get plastic stripper bands that can be released by pressing a tab with a screwdriver. But easier access to the five rows of tines on the 2.1m wide pickup is not the only benefit according to Claas, the bands should also revert to their central position rather than pressing against the tines on the chain driven system. On machines with the double-crop roller, the rollers can be hinged forward when you want more room for access room when carrying out maintenance. The profile of the cam track has also been changed to help tine and bearing life.

Moving back along, the four drive chains have been replaced with three that have larger sprockets and links to give additional longevity. The amount of oil being applied to each of the three chains can also be tailored. And speaking of lubrication, the auto-greaser can now look after the wrapper too.

A new external control box has been positioned by the wrapping table to help change rolls etc. The speed of the bale transfer has been trimmed from around 8 seconds and is now closer to 6 seconds. The pre-stretch on the film dispensers can be upped to 82% helping get more bales out of each roll – but you need suitable wrap to do so. If this is not available you can revert to a 70% pre-stretch.

Something which will be welcomed for a season like this year is bigger tyres. The single axle can be booted on 650 R28 boots, said to be the largest tyres offered on any combi baler today
