Increased demand for new tyres means manufacturers need more raw materials to make them. An important one is carbon black. Used as a filler, BKT is investing US$23 million in a new plant to produce it. Covering approximately 8ha, the new facility is being built within the company’s 2015-opened, 120ha and US$500 million-costing production site at Bhuj, India.
Carbon black is a material produced by the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products such as coal tar, and when it opens, the new plant is expected to produce around 60,000t a year. The company says the new plant will further increase raw material quality and provide better control at the start of the tyre manufacturing process.
