New ways to improve road traffic safety are always welcomed and Claas has developed a system to warn other road users when agricultural vehicles are on their route. Called the Large Vehicle Alert System, the technique transmits telemetry data from tractors and agricultural machinery directly to vehicle navigation systems and smartphone apps. Believed to be the first traffic safety system that proactively informs drivers of networked cars on the position and status of agricultural vehicles on their route, it does this in real time and even shows the location and status.

The system can also provide drivers with alternative routes if the number, width or speed of the agricultural vehicle is likely to hold up traffic. Typical examples could be when there are lots of tractors and trailers on the road during the harvesting season or when moving a large self-propelled harvester. The system is expected to generate considerable interest outside of agriculture and we are looking forward to learning more about the technology at Agritechnica.
