APV grass harrows and air seeders are handled in the UK by North Yorkshire-based KRM, which now makes it possible to add a harrow to a tractor’s front linkage and combine it with a rear roller and air seeder. Here we take a peek at a pre-production version of APV’s new combo

The customary way to refresh an established grass ley is to pull out any unwanted material with spring tines, opening up the crop and reducing competition, and then re-sow to fill in the gaps with new grass.
APV’s harrows do just that, but take an alternative approach to others by using different-sized tines. The front two rows are 10mm diameter (12mm versions are an option) and 300mm long; the rear two rows
are the same length but thinner at 8mm.

Spacings are different, too: the front row is set 75mm apart, the rear closer together at 50mm. All tines have a forward-cranked tip and a double coil spring, and are secured so a broken half-tine isn’t left for the forager or baler to find. The intention is simple — stiffer front tines break up matted thatch, pull out weeds and let air to the grass, while the rear ones separate weeds from soil and (depending on how the harrow is used) can
incorporate new seed.

GS-series rear harrows come in 3m and 6m working widths. Following customer requests, Agritechnica 2013 saw the arrival of a headstock to let GS units be used on the front linkage, so now these harrows can
be combined with an existing rear roller or a new APV item. Last season we tried a pre-production front harrow that, as you’ll see from the picture (right), was pretty sizeable; the maker says the production version
is 300mm shorter front to rear
