New ways to reduce in-field compaction caused by heavy machinery are in but the efforts taken by ERF, the largest organic arable farm in the Netherlands, are quite extreme with a novel system that combines both wheels and tracks. Last autumn we ran a story on the farm’s Areco high-tip trailer. The result of work by Dutch engineering company Berkers Techniek and Arendonk Mechanisation, these companies recently swapped the trailer body for a 25cu.m. capacity Tebbe muck spreader. The 92cm-wide US-made Camoplast rubber tracks provide a valuable way to spread the weight of the spreader in the field (5sq.m. contact area) and reduce the fuel needed to pull it. On the road, the wheels not only reduce track wear and increase travel speeds, but also improve safety by keeping mud off the road. It is difficult to quote exact prices of the Tebbe on tracks, but as a rough guide the high-tipping trailer costs around €180,000. By Steven Vale
