DRIVING IMPRESSION: Apparently this heavy grass roller has its place in rather marshy regions! To give farmers a wider working option, Lomma has come up with the 7.60m wide Profi 7600. We got to try it out earlier this season.
In the UK and Ireland, grassland rollers are generally in the region of 70-90cm in diameter, but over in Germany they like to have a much larger drum. One firm making such rolls is Lomma. Based near Dresden, it has recently introduced the three-gang Profi series, and, though it’s not available here, we were intrigued enough to take a closer look.
Full spec
The Profi 7600 has a working width of 7.60m and is the second biggest model in Lomma’s roller range. The line is captained by the 8.40m wide version, the Profi 8400, while the smaller machine is the 6.20m Profi 6200.
To achieve these much wider working widths, Lomma has gone with a three-gang layout. The central unit is the 2.70m wide ‘Single’ roller, which has a heavy-duty frame complete with a rear hitch system including hydraulic and air connectors at the back. The rear unit is the two-gang Profi roller, which in our case has a working width of 2.70m/roll as well as separate running gear.
The ‘Single’ roller can be used solo or coupled to the rear Profi gang, which is what we are looking at here. To get this onto the tractor the Single roller hitches to the lower links, and the drawbar can be extended by 0.75m to accommodate dual wheels. The Profi 7600 can be used for just consolidation, or, with the optional tools such as the levelling board, tine harrow and a seeder (which in this case was from APV), it can stitch in some fresh seed.
