PRACTICAL TEST: A jack of all trades. That is Krone’s promise for its GX trailer with its belt-based moving floor. We used it to shift all sorts of farming materials in our practical test.

When it comes to carting silage, our European counterparts love a big trailer with a moving floor. Krone already has its TX forage trailer, which was part of our 2022 group test, and then there is the GX440. But is this GX belt floor trailer too good, or too costly for just hauling chopped grass and maize? Let’s put some numbers on it. A base spec, tandem axle GX440 is priced at more than
£131,000, but our tested tri-axle with pretty much all of the extras comes in at £168k — for a trailer!

Flick through the Krone price list and you will spot the equivalent TX forage trailer for £115,000, which is around 10% less than the belt floor trailer. So, we wanted to find out what else a GX can do.

According to Krone, the GX440 model with electronic forced steering on the tridem axles that we tested has a nominal volume of 44m³ without the discharge rollers. The empty GX weighed in at 11.6 tonnes. This leaves a payload of 19.4 tonnes with a gross vehicle weight of 31 tonnes — including a 4t tongue load on the drawbar. This has a K80 spoon as standard plus a K50 cup for the active steering system on the front and rear axles.
